0-day Microsoft DirectX vulnerability discovered for XP

logo_windows Microsoft warned yesterday that hackers are using QuickTime media files to exploit an unpatched 0-day vulnerability in DirectShow.

In a posting on Microsoft's security response center blog company officials confirmed the new vulnerability affects Microsoft DirectShow in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, under limited attack.

After initial investigation Microsoft have confirmed that the vulnerable code was removed as part of their work building Windows Vista. This means that Windows Vista and versions of Windows since Windows Vista (Windows Server 2008, Windows 7) are not vulnerable.

An attacker would try and exploit the vulnerability by crafting a specially formed video file and then posting it on a website or sending it as an attachment in e-mail. While this isn't a browser vulnerability, because the vulnerability is in DirectShow, a browser-based vector is potentially accessible through any browser using media plug-ins that use DirectShow.

Microsoft have provided workarounds for the exploit available under the 971778 security advisory.

Microsoft officially launches new search at Bing.com

bing-logo After several months in the planning, Microsoft has finally taken the covers off its new web search engine, Bing. Set to go live in under a week, Bing is not just a re branding of Microsoft's previous search site Live Search but is a major update introducing new features and a new interface, touted as a "decision engine".

Having been in internal testing for a while under the codename of Kumo, Bing was unveiled today - as expected - at the All Things Digital D7 conference by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Bing is expected to start rolling out in the coming days with worldwide availability expected by June 3.

According to Microsoft, Bing will initially have four main search verticals: shopping around for products (with reviews and price comparisons to help you make your decision), travel planning (using technology from their acquisition of Farecast), researching health conditions (possibly linked to Microsoft HealthVault), and local business search (with integrated reviews and maps).

You may be wondering where such a strange name came from. Yusuf Mehdi, the Senior Vice President of the Online Audience Business Group who demoed Bing on stage at D7 today, reveals "We needed a brand that was as fresh and new [...] A name that was memorable, short, easy to spell, and that would function well as a URL around the world [...] the name needed to clearly communicate that this is something new, to invite you to come back, to re-introduce you to our new and improved service and encourage you to give it a try."

Along with the relaunch, the Virtual Earth mapping platform will now be known as Bing Maps for Enterprise, the advanced travel search features made available from Microsoft's acquisition of Farecast will be fully integrated as Bing Travel, and the Live Search cashback program will also be branded to Bing Cashback.

Introducing the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7

ms_win7 At Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference about a year ago today, Julie Larson-Green first introduced Walt Mossberg to Windows 7 and its multi-touch capabilities, which we call Windows Touch. While we’ve been working on bringing natural user interface to you in many Microsoft products, we first introduced multi-touch in Microsoft Surface. Since then, the Windows and Surface development teams have been collaborating closely on bringing multi-touch to Windows, and last year demoed a few applications they created to run on Windows 7. Today, we thought it would be fitting on this “anniversary” of first talking about Windows Touch to introduce the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7.

While touch is built into the “DNA” of Windows 7, something that was talked about in the Touching Windows 7 blog post on the E7 Blog, we thought it would be fun to give you some applications that show what’s possible with this new way to interact with your PC. The Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7 is a set of six multi-touch optimized applications and games that are designed to truly showcase the capabilities of Windows Touch in Windows 7. It consists of 3 casual games, and 3 Microsoft Surface applications that have been created for Windows 7.

Free Vista to Windows 7 Upgrades Program Debuts June 26th

ms_win7 With the Release Candidate Build 7100 development milestone available for download since May 5th, 2009, and Windows 7 making its way toward RTM, Microsoft is also planning to debut the Tech Guarantee Program, now labeled Microsoft’s ‘Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program’ associated with the operating system. The Redmond company offered a similar program for Windows Vista, and it is now planning to do the same for Windows 7, starting June 26th, 2009. The marketing initiative is designed to offer free

upgrades from Windows Vista to Windows 7 for customers who will not wait for the next iteration of the Windows client.
Microsoft has failed to offer any details related to its Technical Guarantee Program for Windows 7, but TechARP revealed that the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program was planned for debut by the end of next month. PC manufacturer Acer has already begun promoting the initiative in Australia, by offering marketing materials advertising the debut of the program. “Beginning June 26, 2009, customers who purchase a qualifying ACER Vista-based PC will receive a comparable version of Windows 7 when available,” reads the message of a slip included with new purchased Acer computers.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program is designed to compensate eventual consumer trends to hold out from buying new computers and wait for the general availability of Windows 7 instead. The Redmond company, in partnership with OEMs, is working to convince users to buy new machines preloaded with Windows Vista and get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when the operating system will become available.

The only eligible Vista editions for the Upgrade Option Program are Home Premium, Business, and Vista Ultimate. The move will be made between equivalent SKUs, for example Vista Ultimate users will receive an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Windows XP is also included in the program, but only for Vista downgrades, essentially only if a Vista license is present.

Windows 7 Beta 1 will start shutting down June 1st

ms_win7 If you downloaded and installed Windows 7 Beta 1 build 7000 back in January, your computer is going to start shutting down every two hours starting June 1st, 2009 until August 1st, 2009 when your computer will become non-functional.
Microsoft sent a e-mail to all participants in the public beta stating:

"We're sending this mail to remind you that Windows 7 Release candidate is available and to make sure you plan ahead for when the Beta expires on August 1, 2009. On June 1, 2009, the PC you're using to test the Beta will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will send you a notice a couple of weeks in advance, and that'd be the ideal time to rebuild your test PC with a non-expired version of Windows, such as the RC or Windows Vista. This will be a clean installation, so be ready to reinstall your programs and data."

With that said it is highly recommended that you download and install the release candidate (RC) that Microsoft released a few weeks ago.

Microsoft may adjust limitations on Windows 7 Starter

ms_win7 According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft will be lifting the three running application limit for Windows 7 Starter Edition.
Previously with XP and Vista, Starter Edition was designed to run on low end equipment and be sold in what Microsoft called "developing markets." But for Windows 7, Microsoft moved Starter Edition into the rest of the world and decided to sell Home Basic in the developing markets instead. Starter Edition is expected to be sold on netbook class systems, so even if there isn't a software coded limit to how many applications you can run at one time, the limited amount of processor and memory resources in the computer will continue to be the deciding factor.

Windows 7 Maximum Hardware Specifications for Netbooks

ms_win7 When it unveiled the SKUs (stock keeping unit strategy) of Windows 7 in February 2009, Microsoft promised that all editions of its next iteration of Windows client would be made available for netbooks. Fact is that Microsoft has constructed Windows 7 to be more lightweight in comparison to Windows Vista, specifically to play nice with netbook computers. But as Windows 7 moves from Release Candidate to RTM, the Redmond company is introducing a strategy similar to that for Windows XP on Ultra Low Cost PCs (ULCPCs), namely a set of maximum hardware specifications.

Microsoft has not confirmed any details yet, but TechARP (via Mary Jo Foley) revealed that Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic for Notebook PCs would require machines not to have screens larger than 10.2 inch, no more than 1 GB of system memory, would be limited to a maximum of 250 GB HDD or 64 GB SDD, and to just single core processors with frequencies smaller than 2 GHz (the CPUs also needed to have a thermal design power no larger than 15 W, with the graphics and chipset not included).

The restrictions will be valid for the Starter edition, the Starter for Small Notebook PC SKU and the Home Basic For Small Notebook PCs flavor reserved exclusively to the Chinese market. While Microsoft has shrunken the maximum allowed screen size for Windows 7 in comparison with Windows XP on netbooks from 12.1" to 10.2", it increased the storage space up from just 160 GB HDD or 32 GB SDD, and processor frequency from the low of 1GHz, while removing all limitations for graphics and touch capabilities.

Google Chrome reaches

logo_smIt's been about 8 months since we launched Google Chrome. Aside from exclaiming how fast it is, users have been sending us lots of feedback and feature requests. We've increased our focus on speed and also added some of the most-requested features. Some of these improvements made it into the Beta version that we first released in March, and we've continued to improve the Beta since then. Today, we are moving the Beta version to the stable channel for all users to enjoy.
Here are some improvements that you'll notice right away:

Improved New Tab Page: The most requested feature from users was the ability to remove thumbnails from the New Tab page. Now you can finally hide that embarrassing gossip blog from the Most Visited section.
Full Screen Mode: If you've ever given a presentation or watched a large video using Google Chrome, you might have wished you could use every last pixel on your screen for the content. Now you can hide the title bar and the rest of the browser window by hitting F11 or selecting the option in the Tools menu.
Form Autofill: Filling out your information in forms over and over again can be tedious. Form autofill helps by showing information you've previously entered into the same form fields automatically. If at any point you want to clear out your information, that's easy to do from the Tools menu.
And here are some improvements that aren't immediately visible, but will make web browsing with Google Chrome more enjoyable:
Increased Stability: Google Chrome is more stable than ever--we have fixed over 300 bugs that caused crashes since launch.
Increased Speed: Making the web faster continues to be our main area of focus. Thanks to a new version of WebKit and an update to our JavaScript engine, V8, interactive web pages will run even faster. We've also made sure that JavaScript keeps running fast even when you have lots of tabs open. Try opening a bunch of web applications and then running your favorite benchmark. You can read more about V8 in our JavaScript scalability post on the Chromium blog.

New Windows 7 Logo Design

New-Windows-7-Logo-Design-2 Microsoft China shamelessly displays the new 7 logo on its nook of the Windows website reserved for the successor of Windows Vista (via Long Zheng). As you can see from the screenshots attached to this article, the design matches perfectly the artwork on the Windows 7 boxes. Microsoft China has obviously jumped the gun when it comes down to publishing Windows 7-related artwork, because Sinofsky & Co. have failed to breathe a word so far as to the designs that would accompany Windows 7 to the market.

In addition to the Chinese Windows 7 website, Microsoft 7 is already using various promotion materials, including banners, DVD covers for Windows 7 Release Candidate Build 7100, and DVD artwork with the new “7” logo (via PCBeta). In this context, it is only a matter of time before the rest of Microsoft follows and unveils the official Windows 7 retail boxes along with visual concepts that will help define “7” for the consumers. But so far, the Redmond-based company is keeping mum on the matter, although the silence serves it no purpose any longer.

Windows Vista Media Center Now with Netflix

Netflix in Windows Media Center

The latest step in the evolution of Windows Media Center in Windows Vista is synonymous with the integration of the Netflix service directly into the default component of Windows. According to Microsoft, Netflix membership in combination with Windows Media Center in either the Home Premium or the Ultimate SKUs of Vista will allow access to in excess of 12,000 movie titles and episodes from Netflix. Essentially users of the Home

Premium and Ultimate editions of Vista will be able to see a new tile labeled Netflix under the “TV + Movies” category in Windows Media Center. Loging into the Netflix account will permit users to stream content right to their PCs.

“You will be able to search the entire Netflix library right from Windows Media Center, and manage both your Instant and DVD Queues. Windows Media Center will also take advantage of Netflix’s “recommended” categories,” explained Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team. “You can also use your Windows Media Center remote to navigate the player controls and queues for Netflix in Windows Media Center too!”

Final version of Windows 7 coming October 15

Predicting the release date of things like Windows 7 beta, RC and now the RTM is something like trying to predict when the end of the world will be. Everyone gets excited about the upcoming date, but when it actually does happen, that's all anyone will care about. Well, get ready for some more predictions as we get further and further away from the RC release and closer to RTM.

The latest prediction, this time from Paul Thurrott, is that Windows 7 will be released to the public on Thursday, October 15. But as he says, this is "according to the current schedule."

Meaning... "don't shoot me if I'm wrong or they change it."

The October 15 date gives Microsoft about 5 months to squash bugs left in the release candidate, which was released on May 5. This date also does seem to match up with the news we reported on last month, via Pocket Lint, that Windows 7 would be available for purchase on the Acer all-in-one Z5600 PC systems starting Saturday, October 23.

Apple's future iPods rumored to get cameras like iPhone

1-22-08-apple-logo Citing tips passed on from one of its sources, Hardmac, the English-language version of France's MacBidouille, says that when Apple refreshes its iPod touch and iPod nano players later this September, both will feature a camera like the iPhone.
Despite some inaccuracies in Hardmac's earlier batch of rumors, adding a camera to the iPod touch may be a logical step for Apple, in that it would nearly double the market for camera-related applications on the App Store set to explode following the release of next-generation iPhones, which will include video recording capabilities as one of their biggest features.

The assertion that the more affordable and compact iPod nanos will also gain camera functionality is a bit more dubious but shouldn't be ruled out entirely. Although there's no developer platform surrounding the nano to help leverage such a feature, the players do include a built-in photo viewer.

Adding a camera to the nano may be a simple but material enough measure that could help drive upgrade cycles on the part of consumers, some of which may be turned on to the novelty of having rudimentary point-and-shoot capabilities built into a device they carry regularly, doing away for the need to tote a separate device more frequently.

Vista SP2 RTM DVD ISO Images Available for Download

ms_vistanewclean Microsoft released Windows Vista Service Pack 2 to manufacturing on April 28, 2009. As was the case with Vista SP1, the RTM and General Availability dates failed to coincide. However, there are those lucky few that can already download and install the service pack 2 bits for Windows Vista. MSDN and TechNet subscribers got access to Vista SP2 RTM since April 30, and were also subsequently served the DVD ISO image for the second service pack for Vista.

Of course, as the Windows client and server operating system updates are aligned post-SP1, Windows Vista SP2 RTM is accompanied by Windows Server 2008 SP2 RTM. In this regard, DVD ISO images for both Vista SP2 RTM and Windows Server 2008 SP2 RTM are currently available for download to MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

“SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 represents Microsoft’s continuing commitment to quality. While most updates contained in SP2 are available as individual downloads, the roll-up convenience of SP2 is a major benefit for administrators. This functionality coupled with new advanced deployment features, such as the single installer and the pre-installation analyzer, means SP2 continues to provide ongoing improvements that our customers have grown to expect from Microsoft,” the Redmond-based company revealed in the Notable Changes in Vista SP2 documentation.

Microsoft has yet to reveal the date at which the public will get access to the final bits of Vista SP2. With the release to manufacturing of Vista SP2, the software giant only mentioned that the service pack would start being served to users in the second quarter of 2009. However, end users will only get SP2 as an update, designed to integrate on top of an existing installation of Vista, and not as a DVD ISO image.

Windows 7 Build 7127 Leaked

ms_win7 Once Windows 7 Build 7127 left Redmond and was offered to a limited number of third-party testers it was just a matter of time before the bits found their way into the wild. A couple of days ago the first pieces of information and screenshots of the RTM-branch development were unveiled. Subsequently, the actual Windows 7 Build 7127.0.090507-1820 releases were leaked and are now available for download from various prominent sources of illegal software, including torrent trackers. Windows 7 Build 7127, a post-Release Candidate milestone, belongs to the RTM branch of the next iteration of Windows client, and was offered by the Redmond company via Microsoft Connect. The bits have not been served to the public through the company's official channels.

Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 Released

Ubuntu-9-10-a-k-a-Karmic-Koala-2 While everybody is enjoying Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), the new release of the Ubuntu operating system, somewhere deep in the Ubuntu headquarters the developers are working hard to bring us all the new stuff that happens in the Linux world today. Therefore we proudly announce that the first alpha release of Ubuntu 9.10, dubbed Karmic Koala, which is scheduled for release in late October this year, was uploaded a few minutes ago on the official mirrors. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it, and we intend to keep you up to date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 9.10 development.

As the development team did not prepare a Live CD for this first alpha version of Ubuntu 9.10, we had to install the Alternate edition. As you can see from the screenshots below, there's nothing new on the surface... the same wallpaper, same GNOME version as in Ubuntu 9.04. We've noticed that the "About Ubuntu" entry from the System menu dissapeared. Under the hood, some of the packages were updated, while most are the same builds as the ones in Jaunty Jackalope.

The kernel packages are at version 2.6.30-5.6, based on Linux kernel 2.6.30 RC5, and OpenOffice.org was updated to version 3.1.0. In Ubuntu 9.10, HAL (the Hardware Abstraction Layer) will be replaced by the new DeviceKit-power and udev-extras, for power management and Fn key maps on laptops. Last but not least, in order to repair the "Intel issues" from Ubuntu 9.04, the Intel video driver will be switched from the old (but stable) EXA acceleration method to the new (still in development) UXA acceleration method. Oh, and EXT3 is still the default filesystem and GCC 4.4 is now the default compiler.

France passes anti-piracy law

The controversial French HADOPI anti-piracy law was passed by the National Assembly today, one step closer to being signed into action. The new law introduces draconian measures to combat piracy including a “three strikes” regime for persistent offenders.

In an attempt to reduce piracy, the French have passed a new law requiring Internet service providers to cut off Internet access for repeat copyright infringers. Under the new ‘HADOPI’ legislation ISPs have to warn their customers twice that they are accused of infringing copyright. If both warnings are ignored, Internet access for that subscriber will be terminated for up to a year - and they’ll have to keep paying their ISP bill throughout this period too.

The law goes much further than disconnecting alleged file-sharers though. In addition it is now possible to take “any action” in order to put a halt to copyright infringement. For example, websites can be blocked without having to provide hard evidence that they are engaging in illegal activities. The Pirate Bay has already been mentioned as one of the sites that could be easily taken out under the new law.

The Senate passed the new law with 189 votes in favor and 14 against.

Intel fined record $1.4 billion in AMD antitrust case

intlogo The European Commission found leading computer chipmaker Intel guilty Wednesday of violating European anti-trust rules and ordered that it pay a fine of €1.06 billion ($1.4 billion).

Intel was allowed to present a defense to the European Commission ahead of Tuesday's ruling.

The commission launched an anti-trust investigation nearly two years ago after determining that Intel abused its dominant position in the computer processing unit (CPU) market.

Its preliminary conclusion said Intel provided substantial rebates to a leading European personal computer (PC) retailer conditional on it selling only Intel-based PCs.

The company also paid a leading computer maker to delay the planned launch of a product line containing parts from its competitor, AMD, the commission said.

In a statement issued by European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes, the EC said,

Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years.

Intel also provided "substantial rebates" to the same computer maker conditional on it obtaining all of its laptop CPU requirements from Intel, the commission said.

Apple Puts the Lock on Snow Leopard APIs – Developer Notes

image_uncia-uncia.jpg---wikipedia,-the-free-encyclopedia Apple has recently seeded its developer community with a new build of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, revealing in the seed notes that Chinese handwriting recognition has been included for multi-touch trackpads. The people at AppleInsider took a closer look at those notes, signaling that Apple had taken a major step towards releasing Snow Leopard to the public.

“More specifically,” the report in question says, “Apple is said to have informed recipients of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard build 10A354 that it has simplified the application programming interfaces (APIs) for working with Grand Central, a new architecture that makes it easier for developers to take advantage of Macs with multiple processing cores.”

Although World of Apple provided the seed notes for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Build 10A354, the publication did not point out to an important line of text included with the documentation, where Apple told developers that, “No further API changes are planned for Snow Leopard.” AppleInsider soon revealed the true meaning of the note in question, saying that Snow Leopard was nearing the “final stretch.”

Citing the same people that were familiar with the latest Snow Leopard build, AppleInsider reported  that it was Grand Central “dispatch” methods that were tweaked, or simplified, and that developers had been told that “API changes are now halted in Snow Leopard.” The developers notes (available below in their entirety, courtesy of World of Apple), confirm the former's findings.

Developer Notes

Grand Central Dispatch
This release contains several significant simplifications to the GCD dispatch API as outlined below. No further API changes are planned for Snow Leopard. Please refer to the dispatch API HeaderDoc and man pages for additional information.

Objects and Finalizers
The attribute structures used when creating dispatch queues and dispatch event sources are now reserved for future expansion. All attributes supported in previous releases may now be set on the queue or source object directly.
Suspension of a dispatch queue or source now applies to all aspects of the object lifecycle including finalization. All calls to dispatch_suspend() and dispatch_resume() must be balanced. It is an error to release the last reference to a dispatch object that is in a suspended state.
The finalizer attribute is now exclusively a function pointer that is passed the current context pointer of the queue or source at the time the last reference is released. The finalizer function will be invoked on the object’s target queue.

Dispatch Queues
A new convenience function dispatch_after() has been added. This function submits a block to a queue at the specified time.
The function dispatch_get_concurrent_queue() has been replaced by dispatch_get_global_queue(). It is now possible to set the target queue of a dispatch queue using dispatch_set_target_queue(). The priority of a dispatch queue is inherited by its target queue. In order to set the priority of a queue created with dispatch_queue_create(), simply set the target queue to the global queue of the desired priority level. By default, queues created with dispatch_queue_create() have the default priority concurrent queue as their target queue.

Dispatch Event Sources
All dispatch event source creation functions have been consolidated into a single dispatch_source_create() function. Constants are provided to specify what base type the event source should monitor. All dispatch sources are now created in a suspended state, and a single call to dispatch_resume() must be performed in order to start delivery of events.

The dispatch_event_t data type has been obsoleted, and all event data may be obtained from the dispatch_source_t reference directly using dispatch_source_get_data(). In addition, it is now possible to specify a distinct event handler block and optional cancellation block for dispatch event sources. The optional cancellation block will only be invoked as the direct result of a call to dispatch_source_cancel(). The event handler block for a source will not be invoked after a call to dispatch_source_cancel() regardless of whether the optional cancellation block is provided.
The event handler block and cancellation handler block have been simplified to take no arguments. The function pointer variants of these blocks will be passed the current context of the dispatch source at the time the function is invoked.
All timer sources are now interval timers (all other types have been obsoleted). The initial fire time, and subsequent repeat interval of a dispatch timer may be set with dispatch_source_set_timer(). In order to get “one-shot” timer semantics, either use the new dispatch_after() convenience routine, or call dispatch_source_cancel() within the event handler block of a dispatch source timer.

Dispatch Apply
The dispatch_apply() function is intended to operate on logically independent compute-bound blocks. The dispatch runtime may limit the number of blocks that execute concurrently as part of a call to dispatch_apply() to the logical number of cores available on the current machine. As a result, creating dependencies between blocks executing as part of the same dispatch_apply() is not advised. More generally, it is not advised to submit blocks to a dispatch queue, which depend on the result of blocks not yet submitted. Please submit work to dispatch queues in dependency order.

Dispatch Group
It is now supported to wait for the completion of the same dispatch group from multiple threads simultaneously using dispatch_group_wait(). Also, multiple notifications may be installed on the same dispatch group using dispatch_group_notify(), and all notifications will be delivered when the group has completed. However, because the notification is delivered asynchronously, it only indicates that the group was empty at the time it was submitted and does not guarantee that the group is still empty at the time the notification is received.
In addition to adding blocks to a dispatch group with dispatch_group_async(), it is now possible to manually manage group membership using dispatch_group_enter() and dispatch_group_leave(). All calls to dispatch_group_enter() and dispatch_group_leave() must be balanced. It is an error to release the last reference to a dispatch group that is not empty.

Dispatch Time
All time-based dispatch functions have been unified to accept dispatch_time_t parameters. The dispatch_time_t data type may be either an absolute time given by dispatch_walltime() or a machine-dependent relative time given by dispatch_time(). The values of this type are opaque and will not work with integer arithmetic, however the aforementioned functions accept a signed delta in nanoseconds that is applied to the specified base time allowing simple arithmetic to be performed.

Kernel Debug Kit
A Kernel Debug Kit is also seeded alongside this Snow Leopard seed. This package contains debug versions of the Mac OS X kernel and many I/O Kit families for use with GDB remote (two-machine) kernel debugging. These files contain full symbolic information, unlike the equivalent files in a normal Mac OS X installation. Also included are GDB macros useful for kernel debugging, a DEBUG kernel built without compiler optimizations, and a script for simplifying the creation of symbol files.

HE-AAC codec
MPEG-4 High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) codec is debuted in SnowLeopard. It is an extension of Low Complexity AAC (AAC-LC) optimized for low-bitrate applications such as streaming audio and podcasts. The sound quality for HE-AAC at 64 kb/s is comparable to AAC-LC at 96 kb/s. For 44.1 kHz stereo audio, the recommended operation range for HE-AAC is 32 - 80 kb/s.

Microsoft hints at new Zune for June

ms_zune2 Microsoft is heating up the Zune advertising and is hinting at a June for a "new product launch".

We've had the hints that a new Zune, namely the Zune HD, could be surfacing this year but an interesting twitter update from the Microsoft Office 2010 team points towards June being the month of the Zune.

The twitter post simply states "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers" but was followed up after a flutter of replies from Twitter users with another tweet saying "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. :)".

Microsoft could be hinting at Zune services for Windows Mobile which have long been rumored as codename "Pink" combined with a rumored "Zune Phone". The software giant could also be hinting at new hardware. Either way we would bet this is to do with E3 which begins in early June. It's a week before Apple's WWDC and if Microsoft and Verizon have been planning a Zune Phone then a week before the new iPhone is a good time to announce it.

Microsoft confirms Windows 7 to launch by December '09

ms_win7 Good news from the kingdom of Redmond, fellow geeks; we've finally been given a more precise (though still not as precise as one could get) release date for Windows 7, the next operating system to come from Microsoft. Word comes from a PressPass article, and while it may be vague, it's still official.

Bill Veghte, who is senior vice president of the Windows Business at Microsoft, stated, "With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we've received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability." This sits well with Acer's prediction (or maybe more than a prediction) that Windows 7 will hit shelves October 23rd, but it was pretty widely accepted that we'll see the new operating system by the end of the year anyway. Whether Acer's date is valid or not, who knows, but it very well could be.

HFS+ Windows Drivers Found in Snow Leopard's Boot Camp

The drivers allow Windows installations to read Mac OS X HFS+ formatted partitions

image_uncia-uncia.jpg---wikipedia,-the-free-encyclopedia Mac-focused site MacRumors claims to have gained knowledge of Windows HFS+ drivers being included with Apple's Boot Camp utility under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The drivers will allow Windows installations to read Mac OS X HFS+ formatted partitions, making it easier for users to move and edit files between the Windows and Mac OS.

According to the report in question, the utility that allows users to boot Microsoft's Windows on their Intel Macs includes the necessary Windows drivers to support the hardware on every existing Macintosh. However, Windows doesn't generally recognize Mac formatted hard drives, thus making it hard or impossible to read or write to them without installing the necessary drivers. “The newest version of Snow Leopard's Boot Camp appears to include these special drivers to allow read access to Mac data even under Windows,” the site has learned.

According to Apple, “Boot Camp supports the most popular 32-bit releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista. When you use either operating system on your Mac, your Windows applications will run at native speed. Windows applications have full access to multiple processors and multiple cores, accelerated 3D graphics, and high-speed connections like USB, FireWire, Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet.”

“If you’re already working with Boot Camp Beta, you’re practically finished before you start. All you need is some new drivers. To install them, simply start up your Mac in Windows and update the drivers from the Leopard DVD,” the description for the current version of Boot Camp (in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard) reads. The same methods should apply to Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) users as well.

Toshiba Dynabook UX Netbook Reviewed

Offers better build quality than most netbooks

Toshiba-Dynabook-UX-Netbook-Reviewed-Generally-Appreciated-2 Like many others, Toshiba also made its debut on the netbook market, with a system that was powered by the successful Intel Atom platform. The company recently updated its portfolio with the introduction of the new, 10-inch Dynabook UX, a system that provided users with a choice for the more recent Intel Atom N280 processor. On that note, the new netbook from Toshiba has just been put through its paces and appreciated for the quality of its overall build, compared to many of the system's current competitors.

According to the fellows over at Portable Monkey, the new netbook from Toshiba has managed to impress on a number of levels, including exterior design, battery power life and build quality. However, like most netbooks, the Dynabook UX or Toshiba NB200 has a few issues, including a low sound volume, limited lid opening range and complicated upgrade option for the netbook's hard drive.

Some of the pros of the system, as they have been published by the fellows over at Portable Monkey, include a very light and portable design, featuring a 3-cell battery that is good for close to 3.5 hours of runtime. The build quality, the large touchpad and the bright display are also noteworthy features of the Dynabook UX. Unfortunately, the system's keyboard, lid and sound system could use some work, while the design of the chassis should allow for a better upgrade for the system's 2.5-inch hard drive.

The Toshiba Dynabook US/NB200 netbook is featured with a 10.1-inch 1024x600 Glossy LED display, an Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, 160GB hard drive, 3-in-1 card reader, integrated WiFi, 0.3MP webcam and the Windows XP operating experience. The system vendor is expected to make the system available in the coming months in Europe and then US for about US$600.

New Kindle to feature a 9.7 inch screen

According to Engadget, the new Amazon Kindle DX will feature a 9.7 inch screen as opposed to the 6 inch screen on the current model. This new model is expected to be officially announced at the Amazon Press Event on the 6th of May.

The bigger screen could make the new Kindle "more newspaper and college textbook-friendly". Universities including Case Western Reserve University, Pace, Princeton, Reed, Arizona State, and Darden School at the University of Virginia have signed up for trials to issue the new Kindles with pre-installed textbooks to college students.

The device is also said to include a built in PDF reader, and "the ability to add annotations in addition to notes and highlights". It is also said to feature a more functional browser. Apparently, New York Times will be offering a $9.95 / month subscription which is a little lower than the current $13.99.

It would be interesting to see if Amazon would sell both the models of the Kindle simultaneously at different price points. It would seem ludicrous if Amazon phases out their second generation Kindle, just barely 3 months after its release.

Windows 7 RC download goes live

ms_win7 It looks like Microsoft has learned its lesson with the delivery of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. The Redmond company jumped the gun on the pre-announced deadline for the availability of the Release Candidate development milestone and started serving the bits a day early. At this point in time, both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of Windows 7 RC are available for public download. What does this mean? Unlike on April 30, when only MSDN and TechNet subscribers were allowed access to the bits, now all users can download their own copy of Windows 7 RC Build 7100.0.090421-1700, completely free, as well as get the product keys from Microsoft to activate the platform.

  • You don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.
  • Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. (Learn more about installing Windows.)
  • Protect your PC and data. Be sure to back up your data and please don't test the RC on your primary home or business PC.
  • Tech details/updates: Before installing the RC, please read the Release Notes and Things to Know for important information about the release.
  • Keep up with the news. You can keep up with general technical information and news by following the team blog. And, you can get non-technical news, tips, and offers by subscribing to the monthly Exploring Windows newsletter.
  • Keep your PC updated: Be sure to turn on automatic updates in Windows Update in case we publish updates for the RC.
  • Installation: You can install the Windows 7 RC on a PC running Windows Vista without backing up the PC—but we encourage you to make a backup for safe keeping. If you're running Windows XP or the Windows 7 Beta, you'll need to backup your data, then do a clean installation of the RC, then reinstall your applications and restore your data. If you need to do a backup, please see How to back up your PC for more details and a suggestion for how to backup a PC running Windows 7 Beta or Windows Vista.

The software giant is encouraging users willing to test drive Windows 7 Release Candidate to either perform a clean install, or to upgrade from Windows Vista.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 Still Being Tested – Build 9J58 Arrives

logo macosx The much-anticipated 10.5.7 update to OS X Leopard is being held off by Apple for further testing in areas such as AFP volumes, Bluetooth stability, crash reporting, logging, Safari, Time Machine, etc. The new build, labeled Mac OS X 10.5.7 9J58, adds just two areas of change, both affecting CFNetwork in association with Safari, VPN and iChat. The seed notes again signal an imminent release, although testing seems to be taking longer than expected.

World of Apple is anew responsible with publishing documentation for the latest Leopard test build. The site notes that the Safari 4 Beta is still incompatible with OS X 10.5.7, as with earlier builds. The release has developers focusing on a total of 26 areas comprising Mac OS X Leopard, among which AFP, Bluetooth, FileSync, iCall, iChat, Mail, MobileMe, Safari, Sound, Time Machine and X11 are mentioned.

Microsoft confirms final Windows 7 system requirements

ms_win7 When Microsoft released the official beta for Windows 7 a while back, it also published a set of system requirements. These were a general overview, and it seems that they have been updated to match the Windows 7 RC recently made available.

Here's the list of initial system requirements Microsoft made available:

* 1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
* 1GB of RAM
* 16 GB of available disk space
* Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128MB of memory (for the Aero interface)

And here, you will find the updated and final list of requirements:

* 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
* 1 GB of RAM (32-bit); 2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
* 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit); 20 GB of avaiable disk space (64-bit)
* DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

According to ZDNet, however, "If you are planning to run Windows XP Mode along with Windows 7, Microsoft is recommending a PC with a minimum of 2GB of memory and 15 GB of additional disk space." Microsoft stated, "In addition, Windows Virtual PC requires a PC with Intel-VT or AMD-V enabled in the CPU, as it takes advantage of the latest advancements in hardware virtualization."

If you're interested in comparing, here is the list of final specifications for Windows Vista:

* 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
* 512 MB of RAM (for Home Basic); 1 GB of RAM for all other versions
* 15 GB of available disk space
* Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory (for Home Basic); 128 MB of graphics memory plus WDDM support for all other versions

Windows 7 RC and Windows XP to be available until 2010

ms_masthead_ltr With all this talk about the Windows 7 RC lately, we've seen a few questions asking, "So, how long will I actually be able to still use it, anyway?" Well, friends, your queries have been answered! Our buddies over at PCWorld are reporting that Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 7 RC will be still active until June 1, 2010. This information was actually leaked about a month ago, but Thursday say the Redmond-based software giant confirm the news.

To add to the lengthy amount of time the RC will be available, it was also confirmed that, "the RC release will be available at least through June 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time." Very good news for those using it, with no intent to purchase the full version for a while (after it's released, of course). How is this compared to Windows Vista RC2? Well, users were allowed to use that for 8 months since it was made available, so 13 months is a hefty boost in terms of the timeframe.

In other news, Windows XP is still going to be available on netbooks for one year after Windows 7 is released. As you can imagine, it'll only be available to vendors selling the netbooks, so don't expect to be able to waltz into a store and pick up a fresh copy of the almost-8-year-old OS. According to ComputerWorld, "Windows-based systems accounted for more than 90% of all netbook shipments from November through January, according to market research firm NPD Group Inc, [thanks to XP]."

Mike Nash, the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows product management group, said that, "It's been a long time since we've had a version of Windows that will actually run better [than the previous version] on the hardware that most customers have." Nash didn't mention when exactly 7 would be released when asked, so it's anyones guess how long XP will truly be available for, but good news none-the-less.

Snow Leopard Improvements You Should Know About

image_uncia-uncia.jpg---wikipedia,-the-free-encyclopedia The improvements

First, the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J56 hinted at the inclusion of the Bluetooth 3.0 standard. This could mean that Apple is already setting up Snow Leopard as the OS to come on the Bluetooth 3.0-enabled Macs that will be available all around Apple stores.
Another build, specifically Mac OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J39, is said to have brought updated speech support system, as well as improvements to Mail signatures, USB drivers, iChat encryption, and the System Profiler's ability to properly show information on Mini DisplayPort adapters.
The Mac OS X 10.5.7 Build 10A286 featured an improved version of QuickTime Player, which now has a "minimal UI" that will prove to be an important addition to a better playback experience, and Safari 4 Beta as the new default browser in Snow Leopard (this way, replacing the previously available Safari 4 developer preview).
Other improvements made available in this seed were a Cocoa makeover for good old Finder, a makeover that includes the Get Info window, the Desktop, and Finder’s Contextual Menus.
Previously seeded Snow Leopard builds also came with a number of over 100 other fixes and improvements, including fixing the color corruption issue, the issue where the computer may wake after Sleep enabled, the problem with AFP C Client and searches, the Mail signature synching issue, the issue with FSCatalogSearch loops and AFP X Client, the problem with CFNetwork FileProtocol and WebArchive, and the issue with HFS and Magneto-Optical Disk.

The rumors

These are some of the improvements you were aware of if you are one of the developers receiving the Snow Leopard seeds on your Mac. Having covered them, let’s head over to the rumor land as I’ve promised above.
Although the rumor machine usually delivers all kinds of sci-fi like pieces of information (some more credible than others), in this case, only one subject managed to catch my attention: the new Quicktime Player that will be made available in Snow Leopard.
As rumors say, the Snow Leopard version of QuickTime will allow its users to easily share any of their video files with other people by quickly uploading it to Google’s video service YouTube.
The only things the user will need for that to happen will be their YouTube username and password. After the user enters their YouTube account details in the dialog displayed by QuickTime, the player will take care of all the other things related to this task, such as the video file’s conversion to a video format suited for online video sharing.
Another, more interesting, rumor says that Apple might finally stop charging Mac users for QuickTime’s Pro by incorporating it directly into Snow Leopard.
